1. OVERVIEW

This improvisation ensemble welcomes adults of all experience levels who wish to explore spontaneous performance through a collaborative and dynamic creative process. More than a class, it is a space to train, experiment, and create together while developing confidence, imagination, and the joy of collective storytelling.

Throughout the season, participants discover the foundations and advanced principles of theatrical improvisation through a variety of formats, including improvised scenes, long-form improvisation, and improv matches. Training focuses on listening, acceptance, storytelling, emotional authenticity, stage presence, and ensemble play, encouraging each participant to take creative risks while supporting their partners on stage.

At the beginning of the season, the group and the coach define the artistic direction of the year according to the ensemble's interests, ambitions, and experience. The program may focus on competitive improvisation, long-form formats, improvised theatre, or a combination of approaches.

2. OBJECTIVES

Throughout the season, participants develop the core principles of improvisation, including listening, acceptance, spontaneity, collaboration, storytelling, character creation, and emotional commitment. They strengthen their creativity, adaptability, confidence, presence, and ability to respond authentically in the moment.

Improvisation also develops essential transferable skills such as communication, leadership, quick decision-making, problem-solving, and trust within an ensemble. Participants progressively become more autonomous performers, capable of creating compelling scenes and supporting collective storytelling without preparation.

The season culminates in one or more public improvisation performances, presented as part of the Winter Fest and, depending on the group's artistic direction, the P.A.S. Festival. Whether through an improv match, a long-form production, or an original improvised show, participants experience the complete process of building an ensemble and performing before a live audience.

3. DISCIPLINE SUMMARY

Improvisation Theatre: Create and Perform Instantly on Stage

Improvisation, often called "improv," is a theatrical creation without a pre-written text or rehearsals. In improv, the actor is simultaneously playwright, director, set designer, and performer. Improvising means bringing creation and production together in real time.

ATH improvisation classes explore various forms, including short forms, long forms, improv duels, catch improv, improv cabaret, and micetro. These formats allow participants to playfully experiment, collaborate, and develop stage presence.

“Improvisation is not an exchange of information between players; it is communion.” – Viola Spolin
